Dr. Doug Totten, Owner
I am fortunate to have chosen such a great profession. Optometry offers the perfect mix of working with people combined with the utilizing of technology and the science in health care. My personal mission is to treat each patient with care and respect in the way that I would want to be treated.
I am blessed to be married to Cathy (we met in college) and we have two children. Michael is in medical school and Julia is finishing high school. We are active in our church and I enjoy running, boating and reading.
ABOUT US
Lorrie Darwin, Front Desk Coordinator
In my position as Front Desk Coordinator I'm often the first contact patients have with our office. I look forward to taking your call for an appointment or greeting you as you arrive at our office. I enjoy many things about my job, but I especially like the opportunities afforded to me to meet new people and welcoming them to our practice. If you have questions about your insurance, the doctor or our services, Im here to assist you!
I came to Lakeshore Eyecare in January 2008 after relocating from Florida to beautiful Muskegon. This is a second, and much more fun, career for me. In a previous life I was a New Products Introduction Manager for a contract manufacturer of printed circuit boards. I have a B.A in Business Administration. Since coming to Lakeshore Eyecare I have also obtained certification as a Certified Paraoptometric (CPO).
When 'Im not on the job, I enjoy spending time with my wonderful husband, Jeff, and our four legged kids Rhea Sadie, & Scott (RIP 2011). My other pastimes include reading and working on our home built in 1919.

Kim Walstra, Lead Optician
In my role as Optician I have many duties. Besides performing preliminary testing to prepare you for your eye exam with Dr.Totten, I'll assist you with selecting your new eyewear. I enjoy helping you put together an eyewear package that suits your vision needs with either glasses or contacts. If you are using a vision insurance plan, I can help you make the most of your benefits. An aspect of my job that I don't consider to be a duty is the pleasure of getting to know new patients and renewing acquaintances with old friends.
I've been with Lakeshore Eyecare since June 2003. Prior to my life as Optician, I spent some years as a High School Business teacher and also as a Medical Insurance Biller. I have a B.A. in Business Education and have also attained certification as a Certified Paraoptometric (CPO).
I am the mother of three grown children and now have the joy of being a grandma. When Im not opticianing, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Roger, tooling around on our Honda Valkayrie taking in the beautiful sights of West Michigan. Im also an avid reader and enjoy gardening.
Julie Erickson, Optician
It was with great excitement that I began my new career as an optician in 2010
After spending 10 years at home raising two amazing boys and a couple of years in a job that didn't fit, I was eager to work in an environment where I was able to spend time with people like YOU everyday. I enjoy hearing each of your stories and addressing your eye care needs.
I have recently completed my CPO (Certified Paraoptometric) certification. It has given me the opportunity to increase my level of knowledge in order to serve you better. Here at LPE, the health of your eyes is of utmost importance to us and I feel fortunate to be a part of that.
My husband and I spend most of our free time back and forth between many different fields and courts throughout West Michigan following our active children.
Jaime Sellers, Optician
Nice to meet you! After six years in the optical profession , I am very happy to call Lakeshore Eyecare my home. I fell in love the first time I stepped foot in this office and knew it was a great fit for me. The warm and friendly atmosphere along with cutting edge technology makes the best patient experience possible. How cool to be a part of that!
I am American Board of Opticianry certified, which means I can give you great advice to help you find that perfect pair of glasses (which happens to be my favorite part of my job!).
When Im at home I spend my time with my fiancé, Brett chasing our two-year old son. I generally have at least one or two craft projects going as I love being creative and making things. In the summer months, we spend as much time as possible outdoors camping and hiking as a family.
Cathy Totten, Insurance Specialist
I joined Lakeshore Eyecare in 2008. I have a bachelors degree in Computer Information Systems from Ferris State University. I love numbers and computers (crazy huh!) and worked for many years in the Information Technology area before joining the team.
My main responsibilities are handling insurance claims and patient billing. In 2010 I earned my Certified Paraoptometric certification.
Two days a week I work at our sister office, Hesperia Eyecare, as the front desk receptionist and optician. It's such a privilege to be part of a great team and I enjoy my job very much.
I am married to Doug and we have two children, Michael and Julia. We enjoy boating, biking, skiing and recently I've taken up snowshoeing with Lorrie and Kim from the office! I also make candles and started my own business called La Speranza which means "hope" in italian.
Nate Gilmore, Optometry Intern
Hello, my name is Nathan Gilmore and I am currently a 3rd year graduate student at the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI.
On breaks from school I have the privilege of working here at Lakeshore Eyecare as a technician/optician.
As a graduate student it is nice to be able to take breaks and work in the field that you want to go in. Dr.Totten and his staff are great at allowing me to do so, as well as great in helping me with the optical side of the profession.
Being from the Muskegon area, I enjoy the chance to return home and help the people of Muskegon with their eyecare needs.
I look forward to assisting you at Lakeshore Eyecare!
Hannah Rillema, Pre-Optometry
Last summer I joined the wonderful team at Lakeshore Eyecare and I am so happy that I have committed to the field of Optometry. Currently I am an Honors Student at Ferris State University working toward being accepted as an Optometry student at the Michigan College of Optometry in Big Rapids, Michigan.
Working as an Optician/Paraoptometric has earned me great experience with selecting frames, lenses and contact lenses, communicating patients individual needs and all around becoming a better person by serving the greater Muskegon area.
I look forward to seeing many patients on Holiday breaks from college as well as during the summer months! I would love to assist you with frame selection and help with your visual needs with the rest of the team at Lakeshore Eyecare!
